Manual Lymphatic Drainage (MLD) is a non-invasive massage technique which activates the musculature of the lymphatic vessel system.
Lymphatic vessels form a dense network around the body and most of the capillaries which drain the body’s tissues, laying just under the skin, and surrounding important body organs.
Contraction
The lymphatic system does not have a pump in the same way that our circulatory system does, so it relies on movement to create contraction of the vessel walls. It plays a vital role, aiding the immune system by filtering the waste fluid and works with the circulatory system to deliver oxygen and nutrients.
Many important lymph nodes lay near joints; under the arm, in the groin and behind the knee. When damaged or restricted by injury or surgery these lymph nodes cease to function correctly and the area which drains into them becomes swollen and congested.
Not only does the fluid containing toxins fail to escape, but the area also becomes deprived of oxygen and nutrients which are important in the healing process. The added tension from swelling often results in further pain and discomfort. Needless to say, this just creates a vicious circle.
