High Sheriff on her bike for charity

This autumn sees the launch of a very special cycling event in Cumbria – The Jennings Rivers Ride.

Cumbria’s current high Sheriff, Iona Frost-Pennington will be taking part on Sunday 18th September, in aid of the Cumbria High Sheriff’s Crimebeat Fund.

Crimebeat Fund

The High Sheriff’s Crimebeat Fund was established by Adam Naylor (High Sheriff 2005/6) and Robin Burgess (2006/7).

This Cumbria based fund has shared objectives with the National Crimebeat Fund – ‘The Youth Crime Prevention Charity of the High Sheriff’s Association of England and Wales’.

The primary purpose is to support young people in danger of becoming involved in the youth justice system and its initial funding came from the residue left in the Cumbria Crimebeat fund that had been dormant for a number of years.

It was the hope of the founder High Sherrif’s that additional funds would be raised by them and their successors so that regular grants could be made in Cumbria.

By the end of March 2010 the fund has awarded grants totalling £11,500 and by doing so has supported 18 projects, 2,861 young people and volunteers.

For those who would like to support our High Sherrif, a Just Giving page has been set up for online donations.

The Jennings Rivers Ride

It’s a series of three bike rides starting and finishing in Keswick and following the route of the devastating floods of 2009.

The reason these rides are special is, unlike other cycle sportives, these have been organised by a local charity – Cumbria Community Foundation – and the entrance fee will raise money for good Cumbrian causes.

If that wasn’t enough, it is a chance for entrants to get sponsors to raise money for any other charity that is close to their heart. Everyone’s a winner!

There are three rides on 18 September 2011:

You can choose from The Family Ride, an all inclusive event that challenges youngsters (and their parents / guardians) to ride a distance of just over eight miles through the beautiful north lakes and taking in the rebuilt Newlands Beck Bridge.

The Middle Distance Event is great for anyone looking for a testing but achievable cycling challenge. The route will appeal to both cycling novices (with some preparation) and experienced riders alike.  You’ll cycle close to 40 miles along lovely roads in the lakes, heading out towards Cockermouth, crossing the Ouse Bridge and returning via the rebuilt Lorton Bridge and finishing with a climb over Whinlatter Pass.

The Big Day Out Ride aims to challenge the more experienced rider and heads all the way out to the Irish Sea at Workington via Cockermouth.  If that was not already enough, riders return to Keswick via Honister, Newlands and Whinlatter passes to complete an epic ride of over 85 miles – although with those hills it is sure to feel more like a hundred!
It’s £10 for The Family Ride and £25 for both The Middle Distance Event and The Big Day Out Ride. The routes will be well signposted, marshalled and supported with feeding stations. Book online at www.cumbriafoundation.org or call: 01900 825760.

If you don’t fancy getting on your bike for a good cause, come and have a great day out in Keswick as Cumbria Community Foundation is also organising a Family Fun Day on Fitz Park on 18 September 2011.

Arctic Circle race for DebRA

Print This Post Print This Post

In March 2012, Duncan Griggs and Marcus Judd are taking part in the Arctic Circle Race, which is held in Greenland.

The ACR cross country ski race is one of the top 10 most difficult endurance challenges in the World and they have been training for 5 months now, recently completed a roller ski around the Kielder Reservoir which was 26 miles in total.

Arctic Circle Race in Greenland

One of the toughest endurance events in the world

The Arctic Circle Race is 100 miles over three days in freezing temperatures with daily ascents of at least 2000 feet and only one or two skiers form the UK attempt the challenge each year.

Marcus and Duncan are using the trip to raise money for the charity DebRA who support patients with Epidermolysis Bullosa (EB) and their carer’s.

Epidermolysis Bullosa is a terrible disease that causes the skin to blister and then shear off at the slightest friction.  It affects individuals from birth, causing much pain and suffering, especially infants and children.

DebRA is a highly specialised charity that works with the NHS to tailor medical care specifically for EB patients.

It goes without saying that these two gentlemen are looking for your support in the form of sponsorship and any donation will be much appreciated.

Donations can be made via the Just Giving website

Look after your feet

Print This Post Print This Post

Make sure you are proud to put your feet on display and help them stay healthy over the summer months.

Woman's sandy feet on beach.

Be proud to show your feet off this summer

Our feet are generally hidden away in socks and footwear but when the sun shines and the beach beckons we need to make sure that our feet look and feel great.

However, all too often we see thickened, yellowing toenails peeping out of shoes and cracked heels flip flopping their way down the street.

A good daily foot care routine will generally keep most of the nasties at bay and keep your tootsies happy, but a bit of professional care can make all the difference.

Think of your visit to a foot health practitioner as an overhaul or MOT for your feet.  Apart from ensuring that nails are trimmed correctly to avoid any ingrown toe nails, they can spot the early signs of nail and skin infections, treating them before major problems arise.

Regular removal of hard skin and callouses not only makes your feet look healthy, but stops pressure and pain from tissue build up, which can lead to problems with walking and posture.

Callouses and corns are also a sign of undue pressure on certain aspects of the foot and if caused by biomechnical problems or ill fitting footwear, your foot health practitioner can advise accordingly.

NHS Shared medical records

People in the Carlisle area are receiving leaflets from the NHS relating to shared medical records across the region.

Practitioners within the NHS can now view your NHS medical records or appropriate section of it through a linked records system.

Your details with us remain unaffected by this change, as The Sportsphysio injury clinic is a private practice and does not have access to the linked network.  Consequently, you can be assured that none of your records held with us can be viewed on this system.

If you require more information about the NHS shared records system, you can speak to your GP or alternatively visit the Cumbria NHS website.

ROGUERUNNER:
John White has recently been helping film director Dan Hartley and his crew in the filming of ‘LAD’ down in the Yorkshire Dales. As well as providing location advice, safety and 4WD, John was also responsible for shooting a drinks can with an air rifle for a close up shot of the inevitable explosion. Did he hit?? – first time of course – well most people would from 5 feet……details from the Roguerunner website at www.roguerunner.com

BLUEBELLS:
In recent years TV programmes have delighted in telling us how springtime is earlier every year, but have neglected to mention how variable the onset of spring is according to the severity of the preceding winter. Each year I take a group of kids from an Essex school for a walk in the Patterdale area on about the same date in mid-May. One part of the walk takes in a magnificent display of bluebells. Three years ago, the bluebells were at their peak and turned the hillsides blue. Last year, on exactly the same date, there was hardly a bluebell to be seen, after a long and cold winter and spring. This year, it’s somewhere in between. Regardless of the impact of global warming, these annual variations are clearly very significant.

FIRES:
Two weeks ago I was in NW Scotland enjoying some fantastic spring sunshine, climbing at Reiff and walking Quinag. Visible from the summit of Quinag was an enormous fire sweeping the hills close to nearby Suilven – the smoke was drifting out to sea for many miles. Lakes climber Dave Birkett was walking to Suilven at the time and reported it is being a huge fire which verged more on frightening rather than impressive. Nearby at Inverkirkiag, where the famous cafe and bookshop stand, firefighters had to spend many hours making sure the fires did not take the premises, and there is now more than 30,000 acres of blackened hiilsides – see photos at this link:

WEEKLY ACTIVITY PROGRAMME:
Highpoint are now running a weekly activity programme in the Lakes, with Rock Climbing, Abseiling, Tunnel Walk, Gorge Scrambling, Longbow Archery and Mountain Biking available for half days during the week – a great idea for just having a go at a new activity, or for families and small groups. Radio 1 Big Weekend in Carlisle

The Radio 1 Big Weekend will be taking place this weekend at Carlisle Airport.

Can we remind patients travelling to our sports injury clinic at Warwick Bridge, that the routes along the A69 and A689 are likely to be busy.

For those of us living and working in the area, the whirring of helicopter blades, pitching of the big tents and rigging of the stages, are a hint at things to come.

Lady Gaga, the Foo Fighters and the other performers will no doubt be arriving imminently along with thousands of eager spectators.

All people visiting our historic border city of Carlisle for the Radio 1 Big Weekend will be very welcome, but we remind you that you are coming to Cumbria.

Yesterday was 11 degrees, today is persisting down and with showers forecast for the weekend, jumpers, waterproofs and wellies may be the order of the day.

As one of my colleagues pointed out a few weeks ago, this is Carlisle’s own Glastonbury and it looks as though it may be just as muddy!

New way to re-grow cartilage

Print This Post Print This Post

Penn State University scientists have developed a new way to re-grow cartilage

As runners well know, cartilage, the shock absorber within the joint, wears down over time and when an injury occurs, it is unable to heal itself. Traumatic injury can cause small tears on the cartilage surface that never heal, and get worse with time. Trauma and arthritis are the primary culprits for sidelining jogging enthusiasts and weekend warriors alike.

When aspirin and rest no longer do the trick, it may be time for surgery. And while bone-grafting procedures have been used for decades, cartilage repair with new therapies is rapidly expanding. Minimally invasive cartilage repair and regeneration involves harvesting healthy cartilage from one site and transplanting the tissue to the defective area. Another approach involves growing new cartilage cells in a lab and re-injecting the cells to replace worn cartilage.

A group of Penn scientists working across engineering and medicine have developed a novel way to allow patients to re-grow cartilage in their own bodies, using their own cells, directly in the site that has been damaged through injury or disease.

Penn Engineering Associate Professor Jason Burdick says the breakthrough represents a new way of thinking about tissue regeneration. The work could lead to new, more effective therapies that offer longer-lasting results.

Additionally, because the cells are taken directly from the patient, they don’t cause an immune response, unlike current grafting and repair technologies, so there is no risk the body will reject the implanted cells.
