School children and their teachers have been the focus of this year’s BackCare Awareness Week 2011.

Young backs are being damaged by overweight schoolbags and badly designed chairs, while thousands of nursery, infant and primary school teachers are suffering in silence from back problems.

If you would like to be part of this exciting campaign, the BackCare website has more information and teachers packs.

Carrying overweight school bags and badly designed backpacks is leading to arise in back problems among young people.  These range from mechanical back pain to the more serious Scoliosis.

Young peoples spines are actively growing and at this crucial sage in their development, it is important to consider what they are carrying on a day to day basis.

BackCare have a range of specially developed Active Backpacks which help spread the load

School chairs

As practitioners, we are seeing more and more people with back problems related to school seating and whilst we appreciate that cost and durability is paramount, the design of many school chairs is unsuitable for their purpose.

Carlisle Business Supplies - School seating

A full range of school seating for all ages is available from Carlisle Business Supplies

Seats that slope backwards force students to bend too far forward to reach the desk.  Students are forced to swing on the front legs of the chair to make it tip forward or perch themselves uncomfortably on the edge of the seat.

Teachers, especially of the younger age groups often sit on the smaller chairs to bring themselves to the same level as the children.  This results in back injury and conditions such as Trochanteric Bursitis.

Make sure your school’s ergonomic assessments include these teachers.

Special tamper proof workstation chairs are available for use in schools and have been specifically designed and tailored to suit all school age groups.

Make sure your school takes professional advice on the type of chairs they use, The Sportsphysio staff are available to do this and we have teamed up with Carlisle Business Supplies who have a great range of chairs for students of all ages, including tamper proof workstation seating.

Their very helpful staff will be happy to discuss your requirements.

Look after your feet

Print This Post Print This Post

Make sure you are proud to put your feet on display and help them stay healthy over the summer months.

Woman's sandy feet on beach.

Be proud to show your feet off this summer

Our feet are generally hidden away in socks and footwear but when the sun shines and the beach beckons we need to make sure that our feet look and feel great.

However, all too often we see thickened, yellowing toenails peeping out of shoes and cracked heels flip flopping their way down the street.

A good daily foot care routine will generally keep most of the nasties at bay and keep your tootsies happy, but a bit of professional care can make all the difference.

Think of your visit to a foot health practitioner as an overhaul or MOT for your feet.  Apart from ensuring that nails are trimmed correctly to avoid any ingrown toe nails, they can spot the early signs of nail and skin infections, treating them before major problems arise.

Regular removal of hard skin and callouses not only makes your feet look healthy, but stops pressure and pain from tissue build up, which can lead to problems with walking and posture.

Callouses and corns are also a sign of undue pressure on certain aspects of the foot and if caused by biomechnical problems or ill fitting footwear, your foot health practitioner can advise accordingly.

Office seating from PSI seating

Your office chair has to offer movement with support

Over 67% of the working population will spend about 70% of their working day, sitting at a workstation or computer terminal.

Put another way, you may spend as much time in an office chair as you do in bed.   It therefore makes sense that the chair is providing all the elements your body needs.

Over 11 million working days are lost every year through back pain, not to mention the impact on family, social life and leisure activities.

Our combined skills are aimed at taking the uncertainty and guessing out of buying office chairs and desks.

Carlisle Business Supplies will sit down and discuss your requirements, take you through the range of suitable options and even arrange for you to spend time trialling the chair or desk at your own premises.

Help is available, locally

If you are unsure about the type of chair suitable for you or your staff, The Sportsphysio  can carry out a simple assessment, discussing any problems that may exist.  We will then advise on the type of chair / desk you need to be looking for and you can pop along to see the friendly, helpful staff at Carlisle Office Supplies who can assist with the rest.

Staff at Carlisle Business Supplies are kept up to date with the latest research into work related conditions, allowing them to understand the specialists and practitioners.  This information they apply when helping you choose your office furniture.

Conversely, we will spend time with the staff of Carlisle Business Supplies to review latest developments in manufacture and design so that we understand what is available to you.

We spend hours on them, shove them into tight shoes and high heels.  Operate machinery, play sports and dig the garden…the daily strain on our feet is relentless, so afford them a little time and professional care to make sure your feet are fit for life!

April 2011 is disrupted by a number of bank holidays and we would like to advise our patients that appointment opportunities will be in high demand.

Easter is late this year, falling on 22nd – 25th April.  This is followed very closely on Friday 29th by an extra bank holiday for the Royal wedding of HRH Prince William of Wales and Catherine Middleton.

May Day will see another holiday that same weekend on Tuesday 2nd May.

We strongly advise anybody who may wish to book an appointment at our Carlisle injury clinic during this time, to do so as soon as possible.

Thank you for your cooperation during this busy period and trust you will join us in wishing our Royal couple all the best for their future together.
