Headaches can have a number of causes but one of the most common is tension in the muscles and fascia around the neck and shoulders.
Once it has been established that your headache is not due to eye strain, vascular problems or other causes, you may find that gentle manipulative therapy may help.
According to NHS reports, the majority of headaches are Cervicogenic, meaning they are related to tension in the upper body and neck area.
This tension causes the small bones of the upper spine to compress and many patients say they can feel or hear a gritty sensation in their neck when they turn their head.
The strong attachments of neck and shoulder muscles at the base of the skull, pull on the head making the head feel heavy. In chronic cases, people may also experience reduced range of movement in the neck.
Other causes of headaches can include sinus problems and misalignment of the jaw.
All of these tend to respond well to gentle trigger point treatment and myofascial release. Releasing the tension in the shoulder and neck muscles helps to take the compression out of the spine.
Many people that come to us are frightened that they will have their neck “cracked”. You can be assured that any treatment we apply is gentle and relaxing, we do not use high velocity thrust techniques.
